Most plastic components are formed through injection molding, which involves injecting liquified plastic into a mold where it is cooled, hardened and then ejected. People have been making plastic parts since the late 19th century, shortly after the invention of man-made commercial plastics. The process has been refined over the years, resulting in producing better engineered parts.

Most products today contain some form of plastic or plastic married to metals, whether they are consumer, industrial or medical devices. The number of new plastics and fillers has expanded drastically to fit just about any application. Plastics can be engineered for specific situations, making them incredibly versatile.

The popularity of plastics is driven not only by their ability to be customized, but by the reduced upfront and production costs due to the advent of 3D computer modeling, CNC machining, rapid prototyping and other technological advances. Complex parts have been made simpler with these tools, making it much easier to mold more accurate parts, place gates for optimal mold flow, produce homogeneous parts and eliminate knit lines. Simulating all the facets of plastic part production takes less time than cutting an ounce of steel.

Once the mold is built and the parts are qualified, the molding machines are often run unattended.
There are no further tooling costs though the mold may need refurbishing after many years of use.

Some of the most common reasons for using plastic are as follows:

• Injection molding allows for high production output rates.
• Designflexibility
• Repeatability within tolerances
• You may use inserts within the mold for reinforcement or support for fasteners.
• You may also use fillers for added strength.
• Close tolerances on small intricate parts are possible with Injection Molding.
• More than one material may be used at the same time when utilizing co-Injection Molding.
• There is typically very little post production work required; the parts usually have a very finished look upon ejection.
• All scraps may be reground to be reused; therefore there is very little waste.
• Full automation is possible with Injection Molding.
• Most importantly, the cost of manufacturing is a fraction of similar parts in metal.
